Synopsis[]
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spin-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.[1]
Plot[]
In 1964, Ed and Lorraine Warren are investigating an antique mirror at a curio shop. As Lorraine touches the mirror, it subsequently breaks. She collapses, seeing a vision of an entity and her unborn child, inducing Ed to drive her to the hospital as she is nearing her labor. Tension ramps as the couple instinctively ward off the entity after Lorraine gives birth to their only child, Judy, stillborn, barely getting her back from the brink of death.
Twenty-two years later, the Smurl family moves into a two-story house in Pennsylvania. Jack and Janet Smurl share the home with Jack's parents, Mary and John, along with their four daughters: Dawn, Heather, and the twins, Carin and Shannon. For Heather's birthday, John buys her a large mirror, which the family places in the home without suspicion. During Heather's confirmation, a heavy kitchen ceiling light suddenly crashes down, narrowly missing her. Janet and her daughters begin to hear disembodied voices, see shadowy entities moving through the rooms, and experience a series of paranormal events. The disturbances focus around the mirror, so unsettling the two oldest daughters that they decide to throw it away. The mirror then manifests shards of glass inside Dawn's body the next day, causing her to collapse and violently vomit blood. On the same day, Jack is assaulted by the entity that haunts their home. Desperate for answers, the family makes the difficult choice to go to the press and expose the haunting that has consumed their lives.
Meanwhile, Judy's love interest, Tony Spera, proposes to Judy during Ed's birthday party in their home, but Judy's psychic abilities are beginning to grow stronger, concerning her parents. Judy begins to have disturbing visions of the Annabelle doll, as well as an older woman. Father Gordon attempts to help the Smurls by asking the Warrens, but they refuse because they are retired. He then drives to Pennsylvania to bring in assistance from the Diocese of Scranton, where the demon attacks him and induces him to commit suicide. At Father Gordon's funeral, Judy gets a vision that Father Gordon died in Pennsylvania, and goes on her own, unbeknownst to her parents.
Ed, Lorraine, and Tony frantically search for Judy, leading them to the Smurls. Arriving at the Smurl household in Pennsylvania, Ed and Lorraine begin to encounter supernatural disturbances after being coaxed by Judy to help the family. While the Warrens and the Smurls discuss their next moves, the mirror, now revealed as the source, radiates malevolence. As Lorraine explores the home, she deduces that a demon resides in the house and uncovers that two murders have occurred in the household involving a girl and an older woman. Judy is increasingly drawn toward the mirror in the attic and is haunted by the Annabelle doll. Night falls, and the spirits attempt to possess Judy, and lock Lorraine in the basement and Tony outside after an attempt from the men to move the mirror to Ed's car. The mirror inexplicably returns, which urges Lorraine to tap into her psychic abilities, joining forces with Judy and Ed in a fierce series of prayers, and eventually manages to drive the entity out, shattering the mirror. In the aftermath, the relieved Smurls live in the house for another three years, and the Warrens safely secure the cursed mirror away in their occult museum.
In a final scene, Judy is then walked along the aisle by Ed as she is wed to her fiancé, Tony. Among the guests are familiar faces from the Warrens' past cases, including Carolyn Perron, Janet Hodgson, and David Glatzel. On the eve of the wedding, Ed and Lorraine share a final dance, reminiscing that it was their trust and faith that fortified them for the past thirty years against evil.
